Scorpions in my house!

As we move into the warm, hot months of late spring and summer -- the creepy, crawlies are coming out of hiding.

We're seeing the emergence of snakes and SCORPIONS.

Last night, as I was climbing the stairs to my bedroom -- I had a VERY close encounter with a rather large scorpion that blended in quite well with my oatmeal-colored carpet.

Somehow, I managed to see the thing move. I'VE come to learn scorpions can crawl FAST -- and it was coming right at me.

Here's the deal, I don't do bugs. So, what's a girl to do -- but SCREAM!?!

I leaped over the the land-lobster and yelled for my daughter's help.

Being that she's 14 -- and has inherited my fear of insects -- she wasn't really much help at all.

Picture this....she and I are on opposite sides of the scorpion. It has stopped dead in it's tracks, among the comotion, and positioned its stinger above its body -- and we are both shouting orders about getting rid of the thing.

My daughter is screaming at me to SMASH it -- I'm screaming at her to get tupperware with a lid, so I can trap it.

In the end, hands trembling...I managed to coax the scorpion into the tupperware and dump it outside.

My daughter ran after it -- trying to smash it with a broom -- but, it got away.

No doubt -- to make its way back into my house.

This truly was a frightening situation for me. Rational or not -- scorpions terrify me.

Aside from getting my house sprayed every month, which I do, I don't know how to scorpion-proof my home.

I've seen black flashlights and scorpion spray, that claims to kill them on contact, at the local hardware store. But, does it work?

I plan to try it out and let you know.

In the meantime...yes, I know scorpions really can't do much harm to the average person. But, Ewwwwwwww!!!!

Being of the male persuasion I'm required, by law I believe, to be the one to handle all sorts of creepy crawlies that my wife and kids run across.  And just because I appear calm and collected on the outside, inside I'm screaming and jumping around just like the rest of them.  Scorpions are the freakiest creatures I've ever run across, and the fact that they help control the pest population doesn't even raise their value to me.  I'll give spiders the benefit of the doubt before deciding to kill or catch and release.  I've even been known to spare a fly or two, but IMHO the only good scorpion is a dead scorpion.

I found one in my boot, so now I religiously shake them out before I put them on.  My wife was picking up laundry and hand one fall out of the clothes and land on her arm,  she screamed so loud she lost her voice for a week.  And even with all the fact/opinions regarding cats and scorpions, our cat was even stung on her nose by one, and I honestly think it changed her personality.

I haven't seen the scorpion spray but I would definitely love to hear if it works or not.  I have, however, emptied an entire can of Raid on a scorpion and it just kept on a truckin' so I know that doesn't work.  I've been told many times, that the only way to "scorpion-proof" your house is to just remove its food supply.  But even then it's not a guarantee.

Hopefully the scorpion you encountered was just lost, and he tells his buddies to leave you alone since you spared his life and all.  Wishful thinking I know.

Anyone who is not scared of scorpions need only watch "Appaloosa" starring Marlon Brando.  That was enough to scare me of scorpions!
