I'm approaching today's blog topic with a little bit of hesitancy... I almost feel like I need to tread lightly on this one.
You see, so often, we bring you stories about sad events: children getting kidnapped, people getting killed. It's tough to deliver those stories... even tougher when they become personal.
We covered a story recently about a man driving on the 202 San Tan Freeway who was hit by a wrong-way driver.
I did not know that man - who was apparently driving into work early, so he could come home early and spend more time with his family. But I know someone who did know him. He was the husband of a childhood friend... to my college roommate.
She called me yesterday - in tears.
This is the strange part about being involved in the news - a lot of times, you're connected to the story simply because you're the one reading it, researching it, etc.
In this case, the connection went deeper... and the side of the story you couldn't see was the tears being shed by a woman who lost a friend... and a family now fatherless.
As my old roommate and I were ending our phone conversation, she said she just wanted to let me know how much our friendship meant... and "be careful out there."
I guess I would I encourage all of you to do the same.
