Daybreak Daily

Broken record: gas prices are too high!

As we begrudgingly fill up our gas tanks, paying roughly $3.70 a gallon here in the Phoenix area, comes news that prices could hit five dollars a gallon (somewhere in the nation) by July!

We all complain and spout theories --  as to who's to blame.

But, here we are, lame ducks -- going about our regular day-to-day driving business, because what else are we to do?

I spent the Memorial Day weekend in Palm Springs -- where I paid more than four bucks a gallon for my trip home to Phoenix.

Plus or minus 30 cents, it really doesn't matter -- gas prices are still taking a big chunk out of our banks accounts.

I will say, heading Eastbound on I-10, I saw fewer cars on the road than in years past during this holiday weekend.

Normally on my way back to Phoenix from California, I see tons of big trucks pulling ski boats and jet skis as they head west from Lake Havasu or other spots along the Colorado River.

I only saw a handful yesterday.

And, usually on a holiday weekend, my pit-stop in Blythe is met with hoards of river and lake-goers cramming into the various fast food jaunts.

Patience is required then.

Yesterday, I stood in line, placed my order and was out of there in 10 minutes!

I also didn't have much company from drivers heading east.

From what I can tell, it seems gas prices are at least keeping folks from taking long road trips.

What was your experience this past Memorial Day weekend?

Did you notice fewer cars on the roads or fewer tourists at your favorite Arizona getaways?

And, what, if anything, are you doing to handle the rising cost of gas?

As for me, obviously I'm paying -- and complaining.

Since retirement I do a lot of volunteering and the price of gas has forced me to cut back from volunteering 4-5 days/week to a maximum of 3.  On a fixed income I can't afford to do more.  Unfortunately a lot of businesses depend on their volunteers and if we can't afford to drive to volunteer, that is going to change.

Thanks for your comment, Paul. I'm always thinking about story ideas and you gave me a good one -- a good angle on the crazy gas price story. Would you email me at rebecca.thomas@abc15.com, please. :-)

I, too, went to visit family in Goodyear over the Memorial Day weekend.  In great anticipation, I took Friday off from work and drove the 2 hours to my brother's house, hitting some heavy spots of rain on the way.  The traffic seemed lighter than I had noticed before.  But I really noticed the difference heading westbound on I-10 going home.  Traffic was very light, and the sun shone brightly.  I think the gas prices have made a big impact on everyone's travel plans.  I probably wouldn't have gone if it hadn't been for my son's family flying in from Spokane, Washington.  I couldn't miss that no matter what the price of gas!

Gas prices are indeed skyrocketing, due to an increase in demand spurred by a record growth internationally. India is stepping up output and production, which is great, as it will modernize their country. But now for the bad news: Due to a Federal Bill, gas will be taxed at an even higher rate than before. Coupled with the fact that we can't drill in several locations where oil is located which would increase the supply, help meet the higher demand, and LOWER THE PRICE, gas prices will rise. If you want to help keep prices lower at the pump, however, learn more and sign the petition put out by Freedom Works at Gas Price Protest:

This petition has 20,000 signatures nationally; join in, learn more about how to pay less, and help everyone save this summer!
