There's a new rule that prohibits gay men from donating blood because the FDA says they are at increased risk for HIV, hepatitis B and certain other infections that can be transmitted by blood transfusion.  Click here for more information

Should that policy be maintained? Sound off below

I don't think this policy should be maintained because it's discriminatory and unfair. The American Red Cross has testing of its own to ensure the safety of donated blood, and they should be the ones responsible for making sure that donated blood is free from diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, and other similar diseases. They should be able to ensure the safety of ANY donated blood, regardless of where it comes from! Anyone can be a carrier of these diseases, so is it fair to say that no one is allowed to donate blood anymore? I don't think so.

It is a ridiculous rule. HIV can infect anyone, gay or straight. No one is immune, not even heterosexual people.

A promiscuous straight male who sleeps around has a high risk of contracting HIV, yet he is allowed to donate. However, a gale male in a monogomous relationship has a very low risk of contracting HIV, yet he is not allowed to donate. How does this make sense?

Blood testing should determine the safety of the donated blood, not the sexual orientation of the donor.

This is not a new rule. It is a very old rule, and I think it is VERY outdated. This rule doesn't make sense, and needs to be reconsidered. We are supposedly a modern and intelligent society, but sometimes we see this type of evidence to the contrary.

This is utterly ridiculous. more and more women are practicing Anal sex these days so what prohibits those who do have unprotected sex anally or otherwise from donating blood?? NOTHING except being openly GAY. This is ridiculous it is like saying that people who are African American can't donate blood because most people with AIDS are black. Which is unacceptable in my opinion.

This is an excellent policy to have in place. Actually, it has been a regulation since about 1985 or so when it was discovered that homosexuals were responsible for spreading AIDS and HIV.

It is unfortunate that the homosexuals, through their promiscuous sex with multiple partners, often as many as 10 to 15 in one night, have caused the spread of this disease. The homosexuals protesting this policy are the same ones that spread the disease to begin with. This is just another case of the homosexuals trying to be a thorn in our side long enough to cause us to just give in to more "political correctness" which is sending our country down the toilet. Homosexuality has been taboo just like incest and rape, for thousands of years. There is no reason to begin accepting this fowl behaviour. It is only serving to further ruin our country anf the world in which we must live. It is a shame.
